Über viele Jahrzehnte pflegte die herrschende Klasse der Vereinigten Staaten den Mythos des „American Dream“ . Jeder könne, wenn er sich nur anstrenge, seinen Traum vom Glück oder gar Reichtum in die Tat umsetzen. Dies war selbst zu den besten Zeiten des Kapitalismus auch in den USA nie der Fall, wird jedoch unter den Bedingungen der Krise zur Farce. <\/b><\/p>\n

Neueste Zahlen belegen den tiefen Absturz, der für viele Millionen Menschen seit Beginn der Krise im Jahre 2007 begann. Im vergangenen Jahr fiel das durchschnittliche Einkommen einer typischen Familie zum dritten Mal in Folge, und zwar um 2,3 Prozent. Inflationsbereinigt liegt es nun um satte 6 Prozent niedriger als vor Beginn der Finanzkrise und ist nun auf dem Niveau des Jahres 1996 angekommen. Die Zahl der Armen stieg um 2,6 Millionen auf nun 46,2 Millionen. Die Armutsquote stieg damit von 14,3 Millionen auf 15,1 Prozent. 49,9 Millionen US-Amerikaner (19,3 Prozent) haben keine Krankenversicherung, eine Million mehr als noch ein Jahr zuvor. Neben den unmittelbaren Konsequenzen für die betroffenen Menschen, hat diese Entwicklung wichtige politische Folgen. Über einen langen Zeitraum hatten Lohnabhängige in den Vereinigten Staaten größere Illusionen in den Kapitalismus als in Europa. Die Arbeiterbewegung war politisch und organisatorisch schwächer. Die schrecklichen Folgen der Krise haben bereits zum Umdenken bei Vielen geführt und es hat wichtige Kämpfe gegeben. Man braucht kein Prophet zu sein, um zu erahnen, dass sich dies in den nächsten Jahren verstärken wird.
